Mag ni Dal no Sheero

Sweet made from moong dal/split green gram without skin

Indian sweet made from moong dal
Mag ni Dal no Sheero is one of those dishes, which is cooked and consumed chiefly in the winter because of its richness. It is believed certain rich foods, that are also high in nutrition, have a very positive effect on overall health when consumed on cold winter mornings. The cold facilitates the digestion and absorption into the body of the beneficial elements in the dish. Eating right in winter along with the right amount of exercise is supposed to keep you healthy for most part of the year.

Having this Sheero for breakfast can give you a lot of energy throughout the day, especially if you are looking forward to a very physical day. A small portion for breakfast is good for children too, especially if they are going to spend all or most of the day outdoors in cold weather. This dish can also be served as a part of a full formal meal.

Soak the moong dal in water for an hour. Drain completely using a sieve and grind it to a paste, that is almost fine, but not quite. It will taste better if the paste is just a tad bit grainy. Heat ghee and roast the moong dal, constantly stirring it. After a few minutes, add sugar to it. Keep roasting it on low heat till the ghee separates. You can, if you wish, add raisins and chopped nuts while roasting or garnishing. Serve piping hot.
